Mame Cohalan was an American visual artist known for her large scale public art installations in and around Washington, DC, Milwaukee, WI and New York, NY. Her murals have appeared on numerous public spaces, including historic buildings in the Nation’s Capital, in the British Airways terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport and at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo.

 

One of Mame’s most significant works of art is Earth Rising, a 60-foot 3D lenticular mural commissioned in the late 1980s by global satellite communications firm Intelsat for its headquarters in Washington, DC. The company subsequently relocated to McLean, VA and the artwork was destined to be destroyed — until Mame and her son Shannon intervened, overseeing its disassembly and working with the building developer to place it in temporary storage at the former Intelsat location. 

 

Sadly, Mame passed away before she was able to find a new home for the artwork and the developer is now asking her family to find a new location for it as soon as possible, or it will be sent to the dump.

 

The artwork is approximately 60 feet long and 8 feet high. It is made of aluminum and frame by steel, and was painted by Mame using a special mineral coating called KEIM. 

 

The Cohalan family will donate the artwork to an appropriate recipient who will underwrite the cost of relocating and installing it in a new exhibit location. As part of the donation agreement, the piece will be restored by Mame’s son Shannon, who has restored several of her other murals.
